“Became a Little Disconnected”: Stephanie White Breaks Down on What Fueled Fever’s Second Consecutive Loss vs. Dream

The Indiana Fever had a complete meltdown against the Atlanta Dream. They started hot in the first half and suddenly crumbled in the second. Indiana held a 59-56 lead at halftime, but the Dream took control in the third quarter, and the Indiana Fever just could not recover. Indiana ended up conceding 113 points, losing by 17. And Indiana coach Stephanie White pointed to a fundamental mistake from the team that led to this loss.

“I felt like it was a lot of shot-making in the first half, and I thought we did some really good things,” Stephanie White told the media after the game. “When they went on that run in the third, we became a little disconnected. We weren’t as active. We weren’t as aware. We weren’t anticipating as much. We just have to find ways to regroup.”

That third quarter had a total of 10 turnovers for the Fever. They finished with 19 in total. Caitlin Clark had seven turnovers by herself as her passes were getting misread by almost everyone in that quarter. Even beyond the turnovers, deflections were the norm as the Fever could not find their groove.

“It’s hard for us to recover when they get those direct points and there’s no transition defense for those kinds of turnovers,” White further said. “It gave them a little momentum.”

The turnover problem has been consistent for the Indiana Fever throughout the season. It’s a byproduct of trying to push the pace. Clark has been guilty of committing 4.6 turnovers per game, which is the highest on the team.

“I think we just have to take care of the ball better, and that starts with me,” Caitlin Clark admitted. “So, I think it’s just focusing on that.”

It comes down to discipline and focus for the Fever. Whenever the opponents have grabbed the momentum, their shoulders have dropped, leading to more elementary errors. Instead of fighting back, the team is getting pinned down. It is also a tactical problem as much as it’s an attitude one.

They are currently operating with different systems at different times. For example, when Clark exploded in that first quarter, she played as a primary ball handler and was the floor general. In the second, she suddenly moved off-ball and attempted only two shots. It also affected their offensive momentum.

This change in momentum is not all on Stephanie White or the schemes. Whenever Clark moves off-ball, there is not enough motion from her to get open looks. Her cuts are minimal, which affects the team’s offense, making it more stale than active.

Additionally, for teams that are trying to push the pace, they don’t have enough rim runners. Aliyah Boston was in foul trouble for almost the entire second half and played only 22 minutes in this game. With Boston out, there was no target for Clark in the paint that could score reliably. That meant messy cuts from their guard group, which led to the turnovers.

The defensive problems were already evident. But these issues in the offense provide a deeper problem for Indiana. Is it time to panic? Well, they had four consecutive wins before these back-to-back losses to an elite side like the Dream. But if the trend continues, this team might not reach its potential.
