When May kicked off, Fred Kerley was eyeing redemption. After a disappointing seventh-place finish in Kingston, the 2022 world 100m champion looked to Miami’s Grand Slam Track meet as his comeback stage. But instead of sprinting back into form, he was booked into custody.
On May 1, Kerley was arrested in Dania Beach, Florida, after allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend and fellow Olympian, Alaysha Johnson, at their team hotel. She claimed he struck her during an argument, resulting in nose injuries—injuries deputies say matched her story. Kerley was charged with misdemeanor battery and released on a $1,000 bond. He admitted an altercation occurred but denied any criminal wrongdoing, calling it a “miscommunication.”
The fallout was immediate. Kerley was pulled from the Miami meet, where he was slated to run the 100m and 200m. He’s since apologized, vowing to “clear his name.” The case remains under investigation. On the other hand, Noah Lyles and Co. are part of something that Fred Kerley wants to be!
When the Adidas Atlanta City Games dropped their lineup for May 17, Fred Kerley wasn’t part of it. He had something to say!
Apparently, Kerley wants to be a part of the race too: “I want to run that 150“, he posted on X.
