Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez, and Ricky Martin were among the big names who rallied behind Democratic presidential hopeful Kamala Harris on Sunday. This came after a speaker at Donald Trump‘s political event at New York's Madison Square Garden called Puerto Rico “a floating island of garbage.”
The blatantly racist remark sparked outrage among prominent Puerto Ricans and many others in the entertainment world.
“There's literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it's called Puerto Rico,” said Tony Hinchcliffe, a “comedian” and podcaster who spoke before Trump took the stage at the famous arena on Sunday evening.
Hinchcliffe's words hit a new low, even for a Trump rally. The crowd's muted response showed it. When he heard scattered boos and little applause, Hinchcliffe quickly backpedaled with an “OK, OK.” Earlier in his speech, he had made other deeply offensive comments about Latino and Black people.
Bad Bunny, a global music sensation with over 45 million Instagram followers, shared Harris' campaign video in response. The video targeted Puerto Rican voters and highlighted Trump's rocky relationship with the island during his time in the White House. Lopez also posted Harris' campaign material for Puerto Rico and the same video that Bad Bunny shared.
With 18.6 million Instagram followers, Singer-actor Ricky Martin did the same on his Instagram Stories. He added “I remember” to Harris' video and included a clip of Hinchcliffe's “garbage” comment. Martin also claimed that his X posts with the same content were being suppressed on the platform formerly known as Twitter, now owned by Trump supporter Elon Musk.
