For the people waiting on Scottie Scheffler, news flash—he has delivered and has proved Mickelson wrong. The 14-time PGA Tour champion added another title to his collection, his first of this season, after returning from wrist surgery, at his hometown event—the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. And he did it in his usual dominating fashion with an 8-stroke lead over Erik van Rooyen in a wire-to-wire victory. It does not get more Scottie Scheffler than that. Now, the world No. 1’s focus is shifting. To more important events.
He is now eyeing Quail Hollow, where he hopes to get his third major title, after disappointment at Augusta this season. At Augusta, Scottie failed to defend his title and finished at T4, having carded 8 under par. For the major redemption, he is willing to forsake participation in the upcoming signature event, the Truist Championship. Speaking to Dan Rapaport post his impressive victory, Scheffler was very open about his approach to the second major of the season. “It is nice for me to be at home for a week. This would give me three weeks in a row at home, leading to a major,” the two-time Masters winner explained.
Scheffler’s last tournament before the CJ Cup Byron Nelson was the RBC Heritage at home, the RBC Heritage. He finished T8 there and opted out of participating in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans before teeing up at the TPC Craig Ranch event. Now that he will not be taking part in the Truist Championship, he will have three weeks in Dallas, where he is surrounded by family. Remember what his caddie’s bib’s message was at McKinney? It was ‘Family,’ his ideal way to bring back mental energy.
So it is safe to say that he will be well-rested and ready when the PGA Championship comes calling at Quail Hollow. “Last year going into the US Open, I feel like I learned a little bit about my prep work. Going from the Memorial to the US Open was definitely a challenge, playing a really difficult golf course a week before. Having not played Philly Cricket before, maybe that factored into my decision a little bit.” Scheffler further added.
Last year, he played a brilliant four rounds of golf to clinch the title at the Memorial Tournament that took place at the Muirfield Village Golf Club. A week later, he struggled considerably at the US Open, carding an 8-over-par score for a T41 finish, his lowest position in the 2024 season. His only other score outside the top 20 came at the BMWp (T33). Guess what? He had played at the FedEx St. Jude Championship a week before as well.

Recuperating with his family by his side might be the ideal way for him to get ready for the PGA Championship, since he is a big family guy. Scottie has always said that golf isn’t his entire life, but just his work. His priorities in life with his family, and his willingness to leave the Masters in between in 2024, had his wife Mere went into labor, was a testament to that. Since his son Bennett’s birth, the family of three has been seen on the course often, showing how much they love each other.
Scheffler’s brilliant record at the PGA Championship
Break or not, the world No. 1 will still be one of the favorites at the second major of the year, considering his impeccable record at the event. While he still hasn’t won it, Scheffler has carded four top 10 finishes at the PGA Championship in five appearances.
This includes a T2 finish at the 2023 edition, where he narrowly missed out on a second major to Brooks Koepka. His only disappointing performance came in the 2022 edition, where he missed the cut. The upcoming PGA Championship will be a great opportunity for the Texas native to set the record straight and finally take the big step into the upper echelons of the golfing world.
Do you think Scottie Scheffler can claim victory at Quail Hollow? Will the rest be in his favor, or will the rust catch up to him?
