Marvel Studios has a history of keeping its actors in the dark over certain storylines and character deaths. Ross Marquand, who replaced Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull for Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, didn’t even know he had been cast in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies until he was about to begin filming his scenes.
Marquand is a talented actor and impressionist who has continued to work with Marvel following Endgame. He lends his voice to Ultron and his sentries in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and What If…? and to Professor X in X-Men ’97. He has also appeared in front of the camera, notably in the final seven seasons of AMC’s The Walking Dead as Aaron.
During a panel appearance at the recent Awesome Con 2025 (via ComicBook.com), Marquand shared how he found out he would be playing Red Skull in Infinity War and Endgame, revealing that he had initially only been told that he would be trying to voice-match a character Hugo Weaving once played.
When did Ross Marquand find out he was playing Red Skull?
“I didn’t know what movie I was going to work on. They didn’t tell me. They quite literally said it was a voice-matching job that may entail voice-matching this character that Hugo [Weaving] played, but they didn’t even say that by name,” he recalled. “It wasn’t until I got to the set that they made me shave and put the [motion capture] dots on. I’m looking around, there’s like a 150 people waiting for me. I’m like, ‘This is not a regular voiceover job. What is going on?’ That’s when the makeup artist leaned over, and he said, ‘Do you know what you’re working on? This is the new Avengers movie.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, God.’ I almost passed out.”
Marquand’s Red Skull scenes were some of the last footage shot for both Avengers movies. The actor explained, “It was the craziest shoot day, because it was the second-to-last shoot day of both films. They shot both concurrently, back-to-back, and half of Hollywood is in these movies. So whenever you’re available, that’s when they get you in, and they shoot you, and they get you out.”
Unfortunately for Marquand, he wasn’t able to act opposite Josh Brolin (Thanos), Zoe Saldaña (Gamora), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), the four actors whose characters encounter Red Skull during their journey to receive the Soul Stone. Brolin and Saldaña had shot their scenes for Infinity War six months earlier, while Johansson and Renner had shot theirs for Endgame three months earlier.
“I was acting with two really lovely body doubles who were giving me the eyeline and giving me the lines to react to. It was a very interesting way to work, I’ll tell you that,” Marquand concluded.
MCU fans can revisit Marquand’s Red Skull performance by streaming Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame on Disney+.
