By changing the original ending, Avengers Endgame: Encore has created a dangerous MCU precedent.
The final moments of Avengers: Endgame have been changed. The original ending featured Steve Rogers dancing with Peggy as they live happily ever after. In Avengers Endgame: Encore, the extended scene depicts the arrival of TVA agent Loki, who offers to “help” Steve and Peggy. Director Anthony Russo describes this new scene as the moment “where Doomsday is born.”
Altering the original ending of an important MCU movie like Avengers: Endgame is a risky proposition that could spell trouble for Marvel‘s future.
Marvel must be careful when changing past endings to promote the future
In movies, endings are, for the most part, supposed to be sacred. Retconning the events of an ending to justify the existence of a sequel is something that happens in Hollywood. Evil Dead II is one of the best examples of when a retcon works. However, the positive examples are few and far between, as many retcons, including Alien 3 and Jaws: The Revenge, failed.
Avengers Endgame: Encore is a unique situation. By all measures, Endgame was a critical and financial success. Many fans, including myself, believed the Russo Brothers “landed the plane” with a satisfying ending.
Now, the Russos have changed that effective ending to set up the events in Avengers: Doomsday. Audiences haven’t rejected it. In fact, they embraced Avengers Endgame: Encore, as it topped the box office this past weekend, an impressive feat for a rerelease.
Every studio loves to replicate its hits. Avengers Endgame: Encore proves that MCU fans are OK with rereleases of their favorite movies. By changing the ending of Endgame, Marvel has now opened the door for future retcons. That could wind up being a terrible precedent, depending on how Marvel treats future rereleases.
By changing the ending, Marvel is training audiences that they can go back and alter the past. If an MCU movie doesn’t work, audiences might call for Marvel to change the ending to something that works better. It’s a tricky situation that Marvel should not replicate going forward.
