Avengers: Doomsday Light Show Hints Doctor Doom Could Easily Kill Thanos in MCU

Disney unveiled an Avengers: Doomsday light show promo depicting the moment when Doctor Doom kills Thanos in Marvel Comics, at the Marketing Expo in Shanghai, China. The moment in question first appeared in Marvel Comics in Secret Wars (2015) #8 and has since come to be widely regarded as an important event in the history of Marvel Comics.

Disney used the Doctor Doom killing Thanos incident from Marvel Comics for a light show promo at its Marketing Expo in Shanghai. Photos of the promo have since made their way to the internet, along with photos of Doctor Doom promotional art, offering what might be the first look at Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.

As mentioned above, this particular iteration of Thanos’ death appears in Secret Wars #8. Following an incursion between Earth-616 and Earth-1610, Doctor Doom transforms into God Emperor Doom with the powers of the Beyonders and creates Battleworld, where he becomes the ruler as its ultimate divine entity.

However, Doom faces opposition from various sections, including Thanos and the Annihilation Horde. They attack on Doom’s Citadel while the world around them descends into complete chaos.

Doom eventually realizes what Thanos intends to do and confronts him. In the comics, the Mad Titan is extremely confident about how their conflict will unfold. When Doom asks Thanos if he has the Infinity Gauntlet, the latter admits he doesn’t but quickly adds that he doesn’t need it.

Unfortunately for Thanos, he is soon proven wrong as Doom easily kills him. While this wasn’t ultimately permanent, it still had a major impact on fans.

The Russo brothers are helming Avengers: Doomsday, which will be the 39th entry in the MCU. It has a massive cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, and Florence Pugh. The movie premieres in US theaters on December 18, 2026.
