The director duo, Joe and Anthony Russo, have teased what the Avengers Endgame: Encore post-credits scene may mean for Avengers: Doomsday. The 2019 MCU blockbuster returned in theaters last week.

Fans have already begun decoding Endgame: Encore’s one specific post-credits scene in relation to Doomsday. It shows a mysterious figure meeting Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner.

During an interaction with Empire, the duo was asked about this scene. The interviewer asked, “That somebody would seem to be Doctor Doom. We hear him say something along the lines of, ‘I’ve come to collect you.’ Can you shed any light on what that might mean? Because there is a thread running through the footage you guys have released about people ‘living stolen lives’. Banner doesn’t seem to be living a stolen life. So, what would Doom’s interest be in him at this point?”

To this, Joe Russo replied, “I mean, look, his interest may extend beyond just Banner. So, that’s what we’ll say about that.” It’s safe to assume Doom’s mysterious plan may include more heroes, alongside Banner.

When told that Ruffalo’s name was missing from the chair reveals for Doomsday’s cast, Joe teased, “Yeah, you’ve got to save some surprises. [laughs]”

He also mentioned that every part of the new footage “that you see has some relevance in some way. There are clues in every piece of that new footage that can lead you to a greater story in Doomsday.”

Mark Ruffalo’s MCU future remains under wraps

Mark Ruffalo was most recently seen in the Marvel blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day, led by Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

Ruffalo reprised his role as Bruce Banner/Hulk and played a crucial part in the story. Before Endgame’s release, there were doubts about the actor’s future in the MCU.

However, the post-credits scene in the rerelease version of Endgame, connected to Doomsday, has confirmed Ruffalo’s return as Hulk. Still, it’s hard to guess his exact role in the movie’s plot. Marvel has yet to disclose all the story details.

Doomsday will also feature Robert Downey Jr. as Victor von Doom, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova/Black Widow, and Tom Hiddleston as Loki.

Other key cast members include Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, and more.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
