Marvel fans should expect a more subdued performance from Channing Tatum as Gambit in Avengers: Doomsday.
After plans for his solo Gambit movie fell apart in 2019, Tatum believed that he would never get the opportunity to portray the Ragin’ Cajun in an X-Men movie. However, five years later, Ryan Reynolds called up Tatum with the offer to appear as a Gambit variant in Marvel Studios‘ Deadpool & Wolverine. Tatum’s portrayal of the superhero mutant in the 2024 movie won over audiences around the world, becoming an instant crowd-pleaser and scene-stealer. The positive reception to his performance led to Marvel making him part of the Doomsday cast.
What will be different about Channing Tatum’s Gambit in Avengers: Doomsday?
While Tatum’s Gambit has become a favorite, there was still some concern within the fandom over how silly the actor played the mutant in Deadpool & Wolverine, with a recurring joke in the movie being that Deadpool could not understand anything coming out of the Ragin’ Cajun’s mouth. Thankfully, Tatum has put those worries to bed, telling Variety during a recent interview to promote his new movie, Roofman, that Gambit will be a lot more subdued in Doomsday.
Tatum revealed that Marvel executives “really had to wrap their mind around the accent and how people are going to understand him,” with the actor explaining that his response to that concern was deciding that he wasn’t “gonna go full Cajun” in Doomsday. “[Directors Anthony and Joe Russo] want things to be funny, but they don’t want to go full Deadpool. They want to keep the drama and keep it tight. When Gambit gets serious — when he drops the Mardi Gras mask — things do matter,” said Tatum.
Tatum’s Remy LeBeau/Gambit is one of eight mutants confirmed to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, with the other seven being Tenoch Huerta Mejía as Namor, Kelsey Grammer as Hank McCoy/Beast, Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier/Professor X, Ian McKellen as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto, Alan Cumming as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Raven Darkhölme/Mystique, and James Marsden as Scott Summers/Cyclops. The latter six are all reprising their roles from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise.
Avengers: Doomsday has been in production since April 2025, with the Russo Brothers at the helm. The highly anticipated crossover sequel is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, as part of Phase 6 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
