The fantasy genre has undergone some massive changes in the past few years, with Game of Thrones revolutionizing the way we watch TV as well as the way we look at fantasy. Even after the success of fantasy masterpieces like The Lord of the Rings, the genre's potential for grit and darkness was underappreciated until Game of Thrones. Part of the reason the series was so well-realized at the beginning was the guidance of original author George R. R. Martin, who had a major influence on the show's direction, before it verged off course.
