Horror is going from strength to strength this year, after a dull 2024 that saw several studio releases underperform at the box office. Already, 2025 has delivered hits such as Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, Zach Cregger’s Weapons, and Final Destinations Bloodlines. Smaller titles, such as Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, Until Dawn, and 28 Years Later also did well. The streak is continuing this week with Warner Bros.’ sixth hit in a row, The Conjuring: Last Rites. The movie seems to be immune to middling reviews, with fans of the franchise turning out in record numbers in theaters. They’re also pushing back against the film’s so-so rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
