Despite a couple of major new releases having debuted in theaters and at least two high-profile shows being released on streaming, perhaps the biggest title of this past week was an Apple TV tentpole. The movie in question appears to have been designed as a franchise-starter, and marks Skydance's first release following the firm's takeover of Warner Bros. It was co-produced by Mattel Studios after the blockbuster success of Barbie in 2023, and the underwhelming performance of this year's Masters of the Universe. Unlike the latter film, whose theatrical run proved beneficial for its eventual Prime Video release, the Apple TV movie debuted directly on streaming. Apple hasn't exactly continued releasing movies theatrically, despite the success of Brad Pitt's F1, which grossed more than $630 million worldwide.
