According to the Associated Press, 32-year-old William Duplessie, a resident of Miami, surrendered to authorities on Tuesday. He now faces multiple charges, including kidnapping, assault, unlawful imprisonment, and criminal possession of a weapon.
Duplessie’s arrest follows those of alleged accomplices John Woeltz, a crypto investor, and Beatrice Folchi, who were taken into custody on Friday. Folchi was initially charged with kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment but has since been released. Woeltz remains in custody as the investigation continues.
The case came to light last Friday when the 28-year-old Italian victim, who had been missing for nearly three weeks, escaped from a luxury Manhattan apartment and contacted law enforcement. The victim told police he had been held against his will, beaten, and tortured by his captors in an effort to force him to surrender access to his cryptocurrency accounts.
Authorities have yet to disclose the total value of the crypto assets involved, but the case underscores the growing risks that high-profile crypto holders face as criminals target digital wealth in increasingly violent ways.
The investigation remains ongoing, with police continuing to piece together the full extent of the conspiracy. More arrests may follow as law enforcement uncovers further evidence.
