Belgian techno star Amelie Lens draws on moments from her journey to create the raw, uplifting, and emotion-fueled soundscapes on her debut album, AURA.
DJ, producer, labelhead, and mother Amelie Lens one of the biggest forces in the techno scene today. Each passing year has seen the Belgian artist expand her offerings to the delight of her fervent fanbase, and now she’s reached another milestone with the release of her debut album, AURA, which is out now via EXHALE.
Amelie Lens shared that, to her, AURA is more than just a collection of tunes. The album represents her connection to the crowds she plays to around the world, where she provides an escape for those looking for connection and freedom. To accomplish this, she drew on her own journey for inspiration — from the early days of her career playing small clubs to headlining major festivals while balancing life as an artist, label owner, and mother.
I wanted ‘AURA’ to feel emotional but still powerful, uplifting but raw. From big festival tracks to the trippy tracks I’d play at 4am at RSO. Although making this album is one of the biggest things I have ever done in my life, I wanted to keep it light and somehow playful. Because that is also how I am as a person. This is the most honest version of myself I’ve ever shared. I hope it brings some light, happiness, and connection to others as it does to me. Because ‘AURA’ is and always will be about my connection to you.
Amelie LensAmelie Lens set the tone for what was to come on AURA with early singles like “falling into acid dreams,” “whatever you do,” and “our frequency.” Her immense production abilities in the techno space drip through each of these tracks, all of which pack a punch. Yet there’s plenty more techno to explore, with other gems like “4am at RSO,” “come closer,” and “the energy is us” traversing BPMs to make the album feel like a true story unfolding.
Among the 11 tunes is a sole collaboration with Angèle, “run,” which doubled as the album’s final single. The Belgian singer-songwriter lends her angelic voice to the energetic atmosphere, guiding listeners forward into the depths of the soundscape. It’s a great example of how Amelie Lens has layered trance elements into her productions, as heard on other AURA tracks like “drift away” and “a track at 150bpm,” though those two lean more into the tech trance and hard trance realms.
At its core, AURA is a snapshot of how far Amelie Lens has come on her journey and her overall passion for underground sounds. It’s also a glimpse at the current state of the techno scene, where artists continue to draw on influences from other sonic realms to create fresh, exciting soundscapes that dominate festivals and clubs worldwide.
