Another popular toy line is heading for the big screen with Amazon, following Barbie’s box-office success. Amazon MGM is reportedly planning a movie around the Squishmallows, a popular brand of collectible plushies.

According to a recent report by Variety, Amazon MGM is developing “a tentpole family film” based on the Squishmallows brand. The studio is currently in the process of licensing rights and co-producing the feature film with Jazwares, the creator of the toy line, and partnering with Moana’s producer, Beau Flynn.

Besides Barbie, other toy lines that have turned into cinematic franchises in the past include Transformers, G.I. Joe, Lego, and many more.

Jazwares partnered with Kelly Toys Holdings to launch Squishmallows in 2017. They are round plushie toys that come in a variety of designs, including animals, foods, and objects, and multiple textures. The brand has since introduced over 3,000 Squishmallow designs.

Squishmallows gained massive attention on social media during the COVID-19 pandemic. Several content creators showed off their collections at the time, leading to a major boost in its popularity. Squishmallow’s official Instagram account currently has a million followers, and the brand has amassed more than 13 billion views on TikTok over the years.

Who else is involved with Amazon MGM Studios’ Squishmallows movie?

Amazon MGM Studios is partnering with Beau Flynn for its upcoming Squishmallows movie. Meanwhile, Shelby Thomas is overseeing the production for the FlynnPictureCo banner.

According to insiders, the studio spared no expense for the deal, hoping to build a global-facing, four-quadrant event with Flynn. For now, it remains unclear whether the movie will be animated, live-action, or a hybrid. The studio has not revealed the creative team attached to the project.

Beau Flynn has helmed several other notable productions in the past. He has worked on Disney movies like Moana and Jungle Cruise. His upcoming projects include Warner Bros.’ “Hello Kitty” animated feature film, which is scheduled for a July 2028 theatrical release. Flynn’s other productions include Black Adam, Red Notice, Baywatch, San Andreas, and more.
