“We have a situation…” is a phrase you don’t want to hear an announcer say. Bad news will likely follow. And that’s exactly what happened during the opening minutes of Edmonton Oilers vs. Calgary Flames at Rogers Place. Just as the players were looking to get into the grove, a fan behind the Oilers bench “collapsed on the stairs,” as per Hockey Patrol’s Austin Kelly.

The Oilers’ doctors immediately jumped into action as the play paused. While few at the stadium seemed to have any idea beyond the fact that the fan had suffered a medical emergency, Bob Mackin of The Breaker News shed some light. “Chatter on Edmonton Fire dispatch radio indicates a male suffered a heart attack,” wrote Mackin. However, fans didn’t need to hear the details to voice their concerns.

“I’ve never seen a sporting event where a fan collapses. The whole arena went hush, and they had to call an ambulance. Scary. Edmonton Oilers Vs Calgary. Prayers for the fan,” commented one Oilers fan, describing the atmosphere inside Rogers Place.

It sounds like there was a medical emergency in the stands at Rogers Place. The game has been delayed because of it.
