“We’re not getting better.” This wasn’t just a frustrated fan ranting in the stands. This was Alex Cora, the manager of the Boston Red Sox, talking after his team lost to the Angels again. Once, looking like the top contender, the Red Sox are now in jeopardy with a record of 30-34. Cora, the strategist who was once a beacon of optimism, is now the target of criticism as the team struggles.
The most recent gut-wrenching setback for the Red Sox was a 4-3 extra-inning game against the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels came to Fenway looking for answers after a string of losses. And, they did find the answers, but what about Boston? Well, they just got another reality check!
The game showed problems, including poor defense, an inconsistent bullpen, and missed chances at the plate. And it’s something they have been facing for a long time now. The frustration is running deep and the questions are being raised from all quarters.
Jared Carrabis, the host of the podcast Baseball is Dead, raised questions on his X handle as well, writing, “I genuinely can’t understand how a team that was .500 last year and added a legit ace, a nasty closer, a top 3 MVP candidate third baseman and unlocked a top 5 hitter in the league at DH could lead to such a dog sh_t baseball team. I mean, this team f—–g BLOWS.”

Well, the Red Sox indeed made moves in the offseason and signed a good bunch of players . They brought in Alex Bregman, a two-time All-Star, to strengthen the infield. Garrett Crochet, a left-handed pitcher with great potential, was supposed to strengthen the starting rotation as well. Cora earned praise for these signings, but his line-up choices during the season have been questionable.
First, it was the 3B chaos, and then his recent decision against the Angels where he decided to put Romy Gonzalez in the cleanup spot, even though he had his troubles while hitting, didn’t go well with the fans. And on top of that, some of Cora’s statements in the media are not helping.
Remember a few days back when Alex Speier of The Boston Globe asked Cora about Devers taking grounders? He said, “I had no idea (that was happening).” Although it was just a warm-up session, the reply caught everyone’s attention. How can the manager not know what’s going on in the team?
Now, Cora finds himself at the crossroads again, with another decision.
Alex Cros at the crossroads: Balancing player development and team performance amid a slump
The Red Sox are struggling, and there’s no denying that. The team is desperate to change its performance graph. The decisions are being made, and now it’s Kristian Campbell who is in the thick of it.
Campbell, a rookie infielder, is struggling after a great start. The 22-year-old won the AL Rookie of the Month award in April after hitting .301 with four home runs and a .902 OPS. But May was hard for him as he went 11-for-82 with a .355 OPS over 22 games, leading to a worrisome situation. Cora might take a call on him, but not immediately.
The manager didn’t dismiss the possibility of sending Campbell down to Triple-A Worcester, but he stressed that the team was committed to helping him grow at the major league level. When asked about the possible change with Campbell, he said, “We don’t rule anything out. But right now, he’s going to play here, and he’s going to get at-bats here, and we’re going to keep pushing him to be better.”
The team is still confident that Campbell can get out of this slump. But he clearly needs to perform better. Will the rookie bounce back and regain the form he was in at the start of the season? He has the manager’s backing for now, that’s for sure!
