Jon Jones is a man of many faces. And we’re not just talking about Daniel Cormier’s words about him being two-faced. We’re quite literally talking about his physical appearance. Remember Jones when he entered the UFC, looking like he got drafted to the UFC straight out of college—clean-shaven with a clean fade? Then there’s the classic light heavyweight champion Jones, who sported a bald head and a beard. Of course, he had the no-hair with a tiny goatee look for a while as the LHW champ. Now, at heavyweight, in his last two fights, he sported a bald head and a beard, similar to him at LHW, but chunkier.
But the latest in the ‘Bones’ haircut saga left fans a bit befuddled. What was it? It’s confusing because it looks like Jon Jones is paying homage to his enemy-turned-friend Israel Adesanya, by paying homage to ‘The Last Stylebender’s favorite show, the American anime-inspired Avatar: The Last Airbender series. Yes, Jones got a haircut similar to the protagonist, ‘Aang’, from the show. The forward-facing arrow? Yes, that’s the one. But he did the ‘Jutsu’ hand motion from the Japanese anime series Naruto, as seen in the reel uploaded to Instagram by Happy Punch. So, he’s somewhat a fan, but not really? Regardless, that doesn’t answer our question.
And why this update, in particular? Are he and Adesanya up to something? Unlikely, because we would have seen the Kiwi fighter in the post. Is this him announcing that he loves the show as much as the former 2-time middleweight champ? Or is it something more cryptic? Maybe this is his way of garnering attention because the title unification bout against Tom Aspinall is close to being confirmed? We’re waiting with bated breaths and crossed fingers for that last outcome to be true.
This gesture by Jon Jones is quite entertaining, but it doesn’t quell our frustration of not seeing him fight the Englishman Tom Aspinall. What we want, as fans, is an update on his fight. And fans let the two-weight champion know exactly what they thought of his new hairstyle.
Fans remind Jon Jones of Aspinall while he shows off his new ‘avatar’
Maybe this is ‘Bones’s’ way of saying he has a new ‘avatar’ or maybe he just likes anime, who knows? But the reference to the element-bending monk along with doing the powerful hand seals from a dangerous Ninja surely is going viral. Fans immediately flocked to the comments to remind him of his ‘duty’ to fight Aspinall in a title unification bout.
One follower referred to his several encounters with the legal system and said, “Gonna look great on his next mugshot.” Jones has been reprimanded before for PED use and also got into recent trouble for allegedly misbehaving with the UFC’s testing officials.
Another follower said, “Can’t wait till Aspinall sends him to the shadow realm,” One commenter had a hilarious take, “Airbend your title to Aspinall bro.” The UFC CEO has answered all our prayers just when things started to look bleak. During UFC 309 he had said, “If we don’t get the fight done, we move on, and we make another fight.” But now he spoke about this during the UFC 313 post-fight presser and said, “Jon Jones wants to fight just when and where is what we’re working on now.” So Jones might not ‘airbed’ the title to Aspinall but there will be a war of punches.
And the shots at him for not fighting Aspinall kept pouring in, “Bro would rather become avatar than fight Aspinall.” On the other hand, another fan, not mentioning the English interim heavyweight champion, wrote, “Jon the last avatar.”
One follower stole the MMA moniker ‘The Last Stylebender’ from Adesanya and bestowed it on Jones, “Jon ‘The Actual Last Stylebender’ Jones,” Another follower took a jibe at Jones for mixing up Naruto and Avatar: The Last Airbender, “Bro had one job but couldn’t separate Avatar from Naruto.”
Haircut aside, will we ever get to see Jon Jones take on Tom Aspinall? As the days go by, the anticipation grows. One thing is for sure. Regardless of who fights whom, the Jones-Aspinall bout will be the biggest matchup in modern UFC history. What do you think of Jon Jones’ haircut? And when will we see him fight Aspinall? Let us know in the comments.
