If divine intervention has a place in baseball, then Pope Leo XIV might just be the hottest name in the AL this season. Yeah, we are serious here! Because reportedly, AL teams are lining up, not for trade talks, but for blessings. First, it was the Rangers who credited their recent hot streak to the Pope himself. And now, in a turn of events, the White Sox have repeated the same antics.
Yes, the South Side has received a heavenly assist. With Pope Leo now reportedly a bona fide fan of the White Sox, the team’s recent string of unlikely victories suddenly finds a narrative that might seem illogical. Coincidence? Not if you ask the players. The Sox are tipping their caps skyward, because it’s Pope Leo season in MLB!
“It’s been exciting, obviously, to have someone of that significance be a White Sox fan. Since he’s been announced to become the Pope, the White Sox have tacked on some wins. So perhaps a higher power is on our side,” MLB insider Bob Nightengale quoted the White Sox GM, Chris Getz.
Maybe it’s not so much a coincidence the White Sox have been playing better of late, GM Chris Getz says, since the arrival of Pope Leo.

Some wins! In recent weeks, the only series win for the White Sox was against the Reds and a game against the Marlins. While apparently, it might not seem like a big deal, it is definitely huge for the last boy of the AL Central! Because the team with a 14-33 record was currently not expected to win a series. So, Getz believes it’s the blessing of the Pope that is creating the magic.
Now, as fans don’t expect the White Sox to make a postseason berth this year, there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a series win! Ain’t it?
For the unversed, Pope Leo XIV is the first US-born pope and a lifelong White Sox fan. This was confirmed by his brother, John Prevost, who stated that Robert has supported the White Sox since their childhood in Dolton, Illinois. John recalled that attending White Sox games was a reward for their service as altar boys, underscoring the family’s South Side roots and their deep connection to the team.
Now, that’s enough for the White Sox to be assured that the Pope’s blessing is always with them. Coincidentally, it came with a few wins as well recently. But considering the current state of the team, even the Pope’s blessing might fall short in getting them to a respectable position.
Despite Pope Leo’s blessings, the White Sox are in a free-fall mode
Are you surprised? But as White Sox fans, you have already seen the worst last year, haven’t you? Remember the record of the team with the most losses in a season!
Well, the White Sox’s 2025 season has been a continuation of their struggles from 2024, marked by a series of disappointing performances and a historically poor start.
The major credit for this horrible performance goes to their offense. The team ranks last in terms of batting average with a .216 BA. Now, we are skeptical if anyone believes a team to do good when they are positioned 30th in terms of scoring runs. Moreover, they are scoring just 3.38 runs per game, down from 3.67 the previous year. Yes, literally, worse than the worst.
Well, while the team is struggling on the field, they still have a few bright spots like Miguel Vargas. He is leading the batting lineup with the highest BA (.237) and home runs (5). Yes, not compared to chart leaders, but still a good figure compared to the White Sox clubhouse.
And ngl, we do expect a few more wins for the White Sox this season, before they go through a rebuild process next year. Well, hopefully they will do that. Now, these few wins obviously depend on their key performers. And a little blessing from the Pope!
