The trailer of Aasha has been unveiled, offering a glimpse into the tense and unpredictable world of the upcoming Malayalam mystery thriller. Headlined by Urvashi, Joju George and Aishwarya Lekshmi, the film appears to revolve around a fractured mother-daughter relationship that takes a dangerous turn following an unexpected encounter on the road. Directed by Safar Sanal, Aasha is scheduled to hit theatres on September 11.

The trailer introduces Urvashi as a strong-willed single mother whose relationship with her daughter, played by Aishwarya Lekshmi, is far from easy. The two appear to have sharply different views on several aspects of life, creating a strained dynamic even as they continue to navigate their lives together. Their disagreements form the emotional backdrop to a story that gradually takes a much darker turn.

A seemingly routine road rage incident brings Joju George’s character into their lives. He plays a rough-edged man who appears to take the encounter personally and begins pursuing the mother and daughter. What initially looks like an isolated confrontation soon assumes more serious implications, with the trailer suggesting that his pursuit will have consequences for everyone involved.

A mother-daughter relationship at the centre

Rather than revealing too much about the plot, the trailer keeps the circumstances surrounding the characters deliberately vague. The focus remains on the growing tension between the three central characters and the ways in which their actions begin to affect one another. Urvashi’s character appears to be at the heart of the story, with her relationship with her daughter providing an emotional dimension to what otherwise seems to be a tense thriller.

Aishwarya Lekshmi’s character, meanwhile, appears to be navigating both her complicated relationship with her mother and the increasingly unsettling situation that develops around them. The trailer hints at disagreements between the two women while also suggesting that their circumstances could force them to confront those differences.

Joju George brings another unpredictable presence to the story. His character’s apparent decision to pursue the women after the road rage incident gives the film its central element of danger, although the trailer stops short of revealing the full extent of his motivations. The mystery surrounding what drives him, and how far the consequences of the initial confrontation will reach, appears to be one of the film’s key hooks.

A new collaboration behind the camera

Aasha marks the directorial debut of Safar Sanal, who has previously worked as an assistant with Joju George, including on the actor’s 2024 film Pani. Sanal has developed Aasha from his own original story and has written the screenplay and dialogues in collaboration with Joju George and Ramesh Girija.

The film brings together an experienced ensemble around its three principal actors. The cast includes Vijayaraghavan, Ramesh Girija, Ajayan Adat, Prashanth Alexander, Joy Mathew, Shari, Amrutha Krishnakumar and Fehmin.

The technical crew includes some familiar names from Malayalam cinema. Govind Vasantha has composed the music, while Madhu Neelakandan is behind the camera. Shan Mohammed serves as the editor, with Vivek Kalthil handling production design and Dinesh Subbarayan choreographing the action sequences.

Produced by Vinayaka Ajith under the Ajith Vinayaka Films banner, Aasha appears to combine a character-driven family conflict with the tension of a revenge thriller. With the trailer deliberately keeping its larger twists under wraps, the film's central question seems to be how a seemingly minor confrontation can spiral into something far more dangerous, and what it ultimately does to the already complicated relationship between a mother and daughter.

Aasha is set to release in theatres on September 11.
