Throughout the 80s and 90s, the single-panel comic seriesThe Far Side was a staple of newspapers across the country with its mix of surrealist humor, pointed commentary, and creative scenarios that could only come from the mind of Gary Larson. First published in 1979, it would go on to be printed in over 1,900 publications, collected in compilations, printed in calendars, and awarded with plenty of accolades, including the National Cartoonist Society Newspaper Panel Cartoon Award. Even though the cartoonist officially brought its run to an end over 30 years ago, the series still has its loyal fans and has persisted to some degree into the digital age thanks to its official website since 2020. Through it, Larson has even debuted the occasional bit of new artwork when an idea strikes, but it mostly exists as a convenient place to experience his bizarre little world.
