The arrival of autumn means, among other things, that it’s time to get ready for a long spell of cold, wet, dreary weather.

With that weather comes a wardrobe change, and unfortunately, a lot of the most functional seasonal ’fits aren’t always the most… elegant.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love a bit of athleisure. In fact, I sit here typing this in my cosiest, comfiest velour tracksuit – I dig it out every year when the cold sets in.

But sometimes, you want to be able to withstand the chilly, rainy elements without looking like you’re about to go for a hike up Ben Nevis.

For those times, these coats and jackets should do the trick and then some.

1) John Lewis Water Repellent Belted Trench Coat

Trench coats truly never go out of style, so you can bet on this being a staple in your winter wardrobe for years to come.

2) Barbour Audrey Showerproof Jacket

I’m a big fan of the gingham check pattern on this jacket.

3) Lauren Ralph Lauren Lined Overcoat

This little number is a prime example of how water repellent coats can be sleek and elegant, too.

4) Navy Borg Reversible Rain Jacket

Get two jackets for the price of one with this adorable reversible jacket.

5) M&S Stormwear™ Collared Utility Trench Coat

Light rain showers have met their match thanks to the Stormwear™ water-repellent technology used in this coat.

6) Aim’n Clay Waterproof Zip Jacket

The understated elegance of this jacket would be right at home down the pub or on a catwalk.

7) Jaeger Waterproof Twill Hooded Raincoat

Waterproof and hooded, this lightweight raincoat literally has you covered.

8) Sosandar Leather Belted Double Breasted Trench Coat

While leather isn’t technically waterproof, it can still do a lot to help keep you dry if you get caught in a shower.

9) Mango Taylor Faux Leather Trench Coat

Faux leather, while also not totally waterproof, can really help you out in a showery pinch.
