Having wealth doesn’t mean that the rich are always jet-setting around the world or buying luxury handbags and real estate. In fact, most rich people avoid many of the things that come with the stereotype of being ultra-wealthy. Here are 9 things that rich people actually hate.
1. Being Treated Differently
Most rich people don’t want to feel catered to or different than the average person. Just because someone has influence doesn’t mean that they flaunt it. We often associate the ultra-wealthy with being hard to please, but in reality many wealthy people are quiet about their financial status.
2. Expensive Cars
Some people enjoy collecting cars or driving nice vehicles, but many rich people prefer cars that many of us drive. A 2022 study by Experian Automotive discovered that many wealthy individuals don’t actually drive fancy cars. For those with a household income above $250,000, 61% choose to drive non-luxury brands like Hondas. Not everyone who is rich feels the need to drive a Lamborghini. In fact, one of the things rich people hate is luxury cars.
3. Michelin Star Meals
While foodies might enjoy meals at Michelin Star restaurants, many rich people can’t stand the pretentiousness of fine dining. Sometimes blending in at a delicious local restaurant is all that the wealthy want to do.
4. Talking about Money
Often the rich feel that if you have to talk about money, you must not have it. Talking too much about money and wealth is seen as taboo. In fact, 62% of Americans don’t talk about money according to new Empower research. We often think about money as status, so we assume that rich people like to show off their status. However, like many other Americans, rich people are conservative when sharing details about their finances.
5. Big Crowds
Many wealthy people enjoy keeping to themselves more than being in a room full of people. While networking is important, attending endless parties and events is usually overrated. Rich people enjoy their privacy and would rather rent out a private box or have a quiet meal at home.
6. Big Opinions
Rich people don’t act like they are the smartest people in the room. If someone is too upfront about their opinions this can be a turnoff. Having open conversations and collaborating are key.
7. Fads
The ultra-wealthy usually don’t partake in trends and fads. Many of them set the trends, especially when it comes to fashion. The rich would rather have quality over quantity. Have you heard of the quiet luxury trend? This fashion trend was born from the luxe taste of the wealthy and focuses on luxurious fabrics that are subtle and chic. The trend, which started in 2023, was inspired by the effortless style of Gwyneth Paltrow predominantly.
8. A Safe Portfolio
The rich understand that you should never rely on one stream of income and always diversify their portfolios. This is why they often invest aggressively and mix in some staples like EFTs. Some experts equate it to building a very strong house.
9. Overconsumption
You may think that the wealthy want to be surrounded by a lot of stuff. In reality, many are minimalists. They rarely invest in things that just create clutter. Instead, they take the emotion out of buying and resist impulse spending.
