Trilogies aren't really en vogue anymore. While the occasional triptych does still occur, franchising is the name of the current game, which means that most series go well beyond three installments. Even those film franchises that once did exist as perfectly contained trilogies, like the original three Jason Bourne movies, have been ruined by unnecessary sequels that add nothing of substance to their stories. Hollywood just can't seem to leave well enough alone.
