If a movie does well, and there’s even a slight chance the story it told can be continued, then you probably shouldn’t be surprised if a sequel gets made. If the first sequel does well enough, then you're looking down the barrel of a probable trilogy, and once a collection of movies is three entries long, or longer, it’s fair to call it a series.
