The second trailer for GTA 6 is out now but it doesn’t spell out much in terms of gameplay and features, but if you look closely there are lots of clues.
GTA 6 Trailer 2 arrived suddenly, and without notice, on Tuesday afternoon and while it looks great it’s surprisingly short on concrete details. We now know the names of a number of the characters, but not much more about the story and almost nothing when it comes to the gameplay.
The forensic analysis of the trailer has already begun though, with fans pouring over the two minute and 46 seconds long video to discover details such as an off-brand PlayStation 5 console and an awful lot of new guns in the briefly shown Ammu-Nation store.
So, here’s a list of all the things we spotted and which the trailer could be hinting at in terms of future gameplay mechanics. Just bear in mind there’s no official word on any of this from Rockstar Games, so it is all open to interpretation. If you spot something we haven’t mentioned, then do let us know via the usual email address and we’ll give you a credit in this article.
1. Captured on PS5
If you look at the credits at the end of the trailer, once the logo appears, you’ll see a little note that says the trailer was ‘Captured on PS5’. That’s not too surprising, since there is no PC version yet and the PlayStation 5 is much more successful than the Xbox Series X/S.
However, it does play into rumours that Sony has a marketing deal with Rockstar Games for GTA 6, that will highlight the PlayStation 5 and, it’s suggested, lead to a bundle with the PS5 Pro. The trailer doesn’t give any indication of that but if you look at the footage of Jason watching the Ammu-Nation advert on TV he seems to have a fake DualSense controller on his coffee table and a stylised PlayStation standing vertically next to the TV.
Neither are official PlayStation products, but they seem to take the same approach as the various cars in the games, none of which are officially licensed but all of which look very similar to a real-world vehicle – to the point where it’s very obvious what they’re supposed to be.
2. Keeping in shape
Although he wasn’t in the first trailer much, one of the first things that strikes you about Jason in Trailer 2 is that he is looking super buff, with much bigger muscles than previous footage has implied. He’s topless a lot and there’s a scene of him lifting weights, which may imply that Jason and Lucia can gain and lose weight, and muscles, depending on what they eat and what kind of exercise they do.
This was a feature in GTA: San Andreas on the PlayStation 2 but it was divisive and wasn’t featured in any of the subsequent games. It wasn’t universally hated though and with some tweaks a more nuanced system could be at play in GTA 6.
3. Learning to fight
What might also be making a return from San Andreas is the ability to learning different fighting styles for melee combat. Originally, you could learn mixed martial arts, kickboxing, and boxing, but there’s a scene in the trailer where Lucia seems to be in a (probably illegal) fighting tournament.
It’s not clear what fighting style she’s using but it looks pretty involved and may be an indication that you can learn lots of very specific fighting techniques. What’s not certain is whether Lucia and Jason can both learn the same things. Because Rockstar hasn’t talked about gameplay yet it’s not even confirmed that they’re both playable characters or whether they have the same or different abilities.
4. Local celebrity
It’s always hard to know how much to read into Rockstar screenshots and videos, as while they’re not nearly as filled with clues as some fans seem to think, they do sometimes include purposeful hints. For example, the trailer lingers on Jason driving his car when a woman calls out to him from the street, apparently approving of him.
This may be an indication of some kind of reputation system, where locals will respond to Jason and Lucia depending on how they’ve been acting and how they treat other people. That’s a very GTA kind of a thing to do, but whether it’s just a fun detail or an important gameplay mechanic remains to be seen.
5. Home sweet home
Another element that the trailer may be purposefully trying to hint at is that the place where Jason and Lucia are living seems to change quite a bit during the course of the trailer. They appear to have work done to it at one point, which helps make it look more inviting.
Buying property and moving into better digs has long been a part of GTA but this may be hinting at a much greater level of customisation than ever before. Customising your home is a common part of many games, whether it has any practical benefit or not, and since Rockstar is filling its game world with so much realistic looking furniture and buildings it stands to reason they’d want you to take full advantage of it all.
6. Guns for all
Ammu-Nation has been a part of GTA since the PlayStation 2 era and so it’s no surprise to see it in GTA 6. In fact, ‘Phil’ is almost certain Phil Cassidy from a number of previous GTA games, most famously Vice City where he was voiced by Gary Busey. The biggest takeaway from the ad though, is the various different guns that are on show, both in the Ammu-Nation ad and in-action in the game.
Like the PlayStation 5 and the cars, none of GTA’s weapons are officially licensed, but there’s a knock-off MP5 submachinegun, a pretend AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, a fake AK-47 assault rifle, plus many other unidentified light machineguns, handguns, shotguns, and rifles. There’s probably a rocket launcher in there somewhere too.
7. Legally distinct brands
Speaking of which, you can see a wide variety of cars from previous GTA games, including a number from the fictional Vapid Motor Company. But there’s also a lot of new vehicles, including sports cars very clearly based on Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Porsche models, as well as Mercedes.
Rockstar has never got in trouble for this before but if you’re wondering why they don’t license the real cars it’s probably because that costs a lot of money (which Rockstar don’t need to spend, given GTA has got by fine up to this point) and licences run out after a period of time, which is why games like Forza and Gran Turismo are often withdrawn from sale after four or five years.
8. Gone fishing
One of the key pleasures of a GTA game is all the little mini-games and diversions you can get involved in. You can guarantee that GTA 6 will have more of that than ever, but activities directly implied by the trailer include jet-skiing, fishing, and, in one of the screenshots that Rockstar released, scuba-diving.
Racing (with cars and motorcycles at the very least) is also guaranteed to be a part of the game, but one of the other screenshots features Jason playing pool and someone kayaking.
Hunting alligators is bound to be an option and there also seems to be the implication that you can get directly involved in the music business, perhaps by mixing or recording songs. You can also bet the strip clubs that appear in several scenes will be as least as interactive as in GTA 5.
