In mainstream media, space occupies, well, a lot of space. Sometimes, it’s presented as this expansive, never-ending vacuum that sits outside of familiarity, and that occasionally sends us into existential panic. It can also sometimes feel claustrophobic, especially in the case of many a great space horror, where characters are trapped aboard a spaceship with something terrible.
It can also mean freedom—a freedom from Earth’s physical and even ideological confines—and a chance for something new. For the 20th Read Harder task this year, read a book set in space, and experience all the ways human beings imagine the star-filled frontier.
 Moss’d in Space by Rebecca ThorneCozy sci-fi + spaceship adventures + a sentient moss life support system with serious abandonment issues? Yes please! That would already be more than enough to win me over; but add in an overly optimistic heroine determined to save her sister’s life, compelling sci-fi worldbuilding, and interesting alien species, plus a not-quite-unrequited romance, and you can see why I absolutely devoured this book.  The Scourge Between Stars by Ness BrownThis space horror follows the last humans as they try to make their way back to Earth from the failed colonies their ancestors founded. Jacklyn is the captain of their doomed ship, which seems to be hurtling towards having its inhabitants starve or meet some other horrible fate. Like, say, the bloody, violent deaths that are befalling crew members. She has to figure out what’s killing people before they’re all gone. |
