Tolkiengets treated like the ceiling of the genre a lot of the time, the one book everyone else is quietly trying to live up to whether they admit it or not. That's fair in some ways. He really did build the whole modern shape of fantasy almost single-handedly, farm boys and wizards and long walks included. It's just not the whole story, and it's definitely not the finish line.
