The Lord of the Rings gets called the greatest fantasy novel ever written so often that people have stopped believing in other fantasy books. It's no doubt, a genuinely great book but slow in places it doesn't need to be, thin on its female characters, and morally simple in a way that works fine for its own story but leaves a lot of the genre's potential completely untouched.
