Long before science fiction became the mainstream genre we know today, women writers imagined worlds that challenged their own. They didn't craft stories around adventure and exploration for the sake of escapism, but to confront the dynamics of power, ethics, and identity, tackling the big questions about societal norms and control, unchecked ambition and progress, and the meaning of normalcy and humanity. The futures they built were fictional, but the issues they exposed were, and in many cases still are, very real.
