Fred Warner’s return to the field will have to wait.
The San Francisco 49ers’ star middle linebacker will not be active for Saturday’s divisional playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Thursday.
Warner has been out with a broken ankle since Week 6, but returned to practice earlier this week.
When asked about Warner’s availability for the conference championship, should San Francisco advance, Shanahan was more optimistic.
“I do feel confident in that,” said Shanahan. “We’ll see if it works out.”
Optimism about Warner’s potential playoff return began to bubble near the end of San Francisco’s impressive 12-5 season.
A four-time All-Pro, Warner was one of several key 49ers to miss significant time this season, along with defensive end Nick Bosa and receiver Brandon Aiyuk.
The 49ers will also be without George Kittle in Seattle, who tore his Achilles in last week’s wild-card win over Philadelphia. Receiver Ricky Pearsall is questionable for Saturday.
