Manchester United reportedly have an advantage over Chelsea in the race to sign one of the Premier League’s most highly-rated young players.

Both the Red Devils and the Blues are looking to add more firepower to their squad over the summer and are linked with a number of strikers.

The list includes Benjamin Sesko, Viktor Gyokeres, Alexander Isak and Victor Osimhen.

Another name is Liam Delap who, despite suffering relegation with Ipswich Town, has enjoyed a fantastic first full season in the Premier League, scoring 12 goals in 33 appearances.

United’s main centre-forwards, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, have just seven goals between them, while Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku can only just better Delap’s tally with 13.

Unsurprisingly, his performances have attracted interest from clubs up and down the table as well as from Germany and Spain.

Moreover, the 22-year-old will be available for just £30million this summer thanks to a relegation release clause in his contract.

It is believed United and Chelsea are leading the race for Delap’s signature and, according to talkSPORT, he does have a preference between the two clubs.

It is said the England youth international is leaning more toward United, in part because he wants to return to the north west having spent five years at Manchester City.

Delap would make just six appearances for United’s local rivals before joining Ipswich for £20m last summer.

Chelsea would appear to be the more appealing club given they are fifth in the table while United are 16th, enduring their worst Premier League season ever, though they can still qualify for the Champions League if they beat Tottenham in the Europa League final.

Many pundits have backed United to sign Delap, including Alan Shearer and Ben Foster, but Tim Howard reckons the striker should move to Stamford Bridge instead.

The former Red Devils goalkeeper said: ‘The Manchester United pull, I think for a player like him, it’s still there. Whether that feels different because he was a City player…’

‘I like the Chelsea profile, I like the young team. He goes into a young team and there’s goals there.’
