2026 has been the best year at the box office since the COVID-19 pandemic, with several of the year's biggest hits smashing all expectations. However, as is the case with any given cinematic year, several hopeful blockbusters have flopped. This includes the punk rock The Bride!, which disappointed despite being released as star Jessie Buckley was winning her Academy Award for Best Actress; the hugely frustrating Supergirl, which was unable to capitalize on the 2025 summer success of Superman; and the AI-based thriller Mercy, which followed the most normal route to financial failure by being panned by both critics and audiences.
