Two people were killed in a devastating fire in Yulee on Monday.

It happened on Phillips Road around 5:30 a.m. and the cause of the mobile home fire is still being investigated.

The Nassau County Fire Chief said a third person was transported to the burn unit in Gainesville, and because of the efforts of his brave firefighters, they have a chance to survive.

There were multiple calls to 911 on Monday morning.

“That gave the crews a pretty good indication that when they got on scene there was going to be something to it,” Chief Brady Rigdon said.

Rigdon said it was a defensive fire. The amount of heat firefighters faced early on was too significant to attack the fire from the inside.

Crews were able to rescue one person on the backside of the trailer and the fire was under control in around an hour.

“When they arrived, it was burning from one end to the other. They went to work immediately putting water on it. Of course, it takes a little bit of time and unfortunately, we were not able to rescue the two victims,” Rigdon said.

They were found in separate locations inside. Their identities were not released.

The family who was at the home on Monday afternoon were visibly upset at the scene and asked News4JAX for space.

The state fire marshall is investigating the cause.
