In the same year that Russell Crowe starred in Noah, his former collaborator, director Ridley Scott, released his own biblical epic. The two movies were released a few months apart, which means that they didn’t face off with each other directly. But both films are now viewed as underperformers, with Scott’s movie costing more and grossing less than Noah, which was directed by Darren Aronofsky. Released in March 2014, Noah grossed $360 million worldwide against a reported budget of $160 million. Like most movies set against religious backdrops, it proved to be controversial and was banned in certain regions. Scott’s film was controversial for similar reasons; it was released later that year, in October, and is currently streaming in the United States on Peacock for only a little while longer.
