Critics have a somewhat tumultuous relationship with the horror genre. Whilst some movies break through the perceived barrier, particularly those that fall into the category of elevated horror and deal with societal and political issues. Movies such as Get Out, The Silence of the Lambs and, more recently, Sinners, received widespread critical acclaim. However, this is not the norm but rather seen as bucking a fairly negative trend. For most of the horror genre, there is a perception of an amateurish nature and a lack of artistic merit. This means it becomes more difficult for a horror movie to push behind mediocre reviews, and can even be met with the positive comment of being good for a horror movie.
