Directed by the legendary Akira Kurosawa, Ran was one of his final films. Released in 1985, it is a loose adaptation of William Shakespeare's King Lear set in Japan's Sengoku period. After Throne of Blood, based on Macbeth, and The Dead Sleep Well, based on Hamlet, Ran was Kurosawa's third work inspired by the Bard. Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsuya Nakadai) is an old warlord who gives away his land and power to his sons. But it's an uneven dispersal, and it leads to significant conflict between the sons and the people serving them.
