Beginning in Generation II, Pokémon introduced a gimmick called Shiny Pokémon, named for the sparkle effect that plays when they appear. They are an alternate color to the regular Pokémon and hard to find: the original spawn rate was 1/8192, then changed to 1/4096 in Pokémon X and Y.
