A good many war movies are based on true stories, or at least are set during real-life conflicts, and so there’s going to be some inevitable sense of realism or tangibility captured there. Historical accuracy can contribute to a certain level of reality being conveyed, but it’s also not everything. Realism, or some sense of brutal truth, can come about because a war movie bluntly explores certain realities of war, or because it focuses on intensity above all else.
