20th-century cinema had many defining trends, be it the blockbuster bonanza of the 1980s, the musicals of the '60s, the biblical and historical epics of the '50s, or even the depth and darkness of film noir across the 1940s. The Western genre, however, remained something of a constant throughout the century, dominating Hollywood for the better part of four decades from its eruption in the 1930s, while also soaring with the grit and grime of spaghetti Western cinema in the '60s and '70s, and then experiencing a revisionist resurgence in the '90s.
