There are few things more difficult than finding the perfect opening line, but unsurprisingly, there are literary masterpieces that have managed to do it seamlessly. Roping in a reader with an opening line, whether it's one that's stylistic, action-packed, metaphorical, or all of the above, is no easy feat. A novel only has a handful of words to establish itself, introduce its tone, and intrigue its reader. The opening line is one of the story's most important, and if an author gets things off to a bad start, it's tough to recover in a way that continues pushing readers forward.
