The 1950s were a varied cinematic decade, boasting spectacle filmmaking, genre fare, and more realistic, character-driven films. Much of this creativity was probably the result of studios having to really compete with TV for the first time, needing bigger draws to get audiences into the theater. Either way, it produced many classics, including philosophical dramas, action extravaganzas, and vibrant Hollywood musicals.
