Most books have happy endings, or at least satisfying ones; that's what readers usually want, after all. Who wants to suffer with their fiction? However, a bold few works defy that happy approach, refusing to give us even the faintest of silver linings. Perhaps they kill off beloved characters, or perhaps they bring us face to face with horrible truths. No matter how they do it, the result is the same.
