The best way to describe the heroic bloodshed genre would be to not describe it at all, and instead just point to a bunch of classic films John Woo has directed. There’s A Better Tomorrow, Hard Boiled, and The Killer, for starters, and he even gets a bit heroic bloodshed-y with his English-language movies sometimes, as can be seen in Face/Off.
