IO Interactive has unveiled a major update for 007 First Light, releasing its first cinematic trailer and confirming key story and casting details. The reveal comes as the studio begins full-scale promotion for the upcoming game, which will serve as a new origin story for James Bond. But it’s the appearance of the young 007 that has captured the attention of many fans, with some comparing him to Tom Cruise.
Fans are sure 007 First Light trailer’s James Bond is modeled after Tom Cruise
IO Interactive revealed the first trailer for 007 First Light during the May 2025 PlayStation State of Play, confirming a 2026 release.
The trailer features a young, 26-year-old James Bond, whose origin story involves becoming an orphan at 11, attending British boarding schools, serving in the Royal Navy, and later being recruited by MI6. Lennie James will co-star as Bond’s mentor, John Greenway.
The trailer depicts Bond’s early days with MI6, where he meets reimagined versions of M, Q, and Moneypenny. Gameplay elements include stealth, hand-to-hand combat, use of gadgets, and disguises, with missions spread across multiple global locations.
A press release describes it as a “story-driven action-adventure game” that offers players the choice to use brute force or Bond’s charm (via IGN). IO Interactive first announced the title in 2020 as Project 007, noting it would be an original narrative unrelated to existing Bond films.
Fan reactions to the trailer surfaced quickly on X, with many viewers pointing out the resemblance between the animated Bond and actor Tom Cruise. One user posted, “That’s Ethan Hunt,” referencing Cruise’s Mission: Impossible character. Another added, “Why Bond looking like Tom Cruise,” while others compared the game’s Bond to a blend of Henry Cavill and Cruise.
A third user commented, “If you crossbred Henry Cavill and Tom Cruise you’d get James Bond First Light,” alongside a screenshot from the trailer. Another wrote, “I was thinking Craig + Cruise. But this works too,” referring to former Bond actor Daniel Craig.
One post suggested, “If they’re going to make Bond Jr Tom Cruise just make it a Mission Impossible game. The Hitman gameplay would make an excellent Mission Impossible game,” highlighting IO Interactive’s signature stealth mechanics.
